Happy to have collaborated with my colleague Nimo Jirdeh in producing a brief reflection on the significant importance of local governance in fostering stability, state-building and provision of public services to strengthen legitimacy and the social contract. One such important vehicle has been JPLG, a nationwide, multi-agency, multisectoral local governance program that not only promoted Somali local governance agenda but reshaped local governance landscape for the past 15+ years.
Going forward, a differentiated, innovative, and adaptive approach for sub-national structures is needed to consolidate gains made in the recent past and expand into the areas that have previously received limited assistance.
Localized governance is key to stability, improving quality of life and creating shared prosperity for all.
