How does AI impact our everyday life!

The human innovation and creativity is on perpetual rise; always taking new heights; reaching new levels. Propelled by the technological advancements, it creates new ways of doing things, often seamlessly, cost effectively and in innovative fashion. In general, computer-aided tools tend to simplify work and produce better results in otherwise tedious, stressful and demanding tasks. Artificial intelligence, specifically has taken many disciplines into new heights.

The launch of Chat GPT and similar features indeed revolutionised many fields including writing. Such applications manage to create contents fairly quickly, easily and efficiently. With Chat GPT and related applications, one can now create reports, articles, stories and even academic papers easily and interestingly with greater accuracy, proficiency and clarity.

However, one should be mindful that such tools are meant to simplify, assist and enhance human creativity but not to replace them. These tools should be used in a way that augments human creativity but not diminishes it. Sadly, many now use it as an alternate to human cognition!

As a person, I take advantage of AI tools mainly to polish and get rid off redundancy for my notes, and I appreciate its seamless services. Yet, I just want to flag where it could potentially kill natural talents, cognitive ability and personal growth. Students and those in the learning stage, among others, are far more vulnerable to being exposed to this simplistic way of doing things and hence suffer life-long dependency on the machines. Early research findings also suggest excessive reliance on such tools kills confidence, creates addiction as people rely on mechanical devices.

Since its inception, I come across almost on daily basis, AI-generated contents often camouflaged as human texts. One of the first indicators I employ to detect them is the wordiness, length of the sentences and repetition. Sentences and paragraphs also clearly lack the human empathy or natural senses. Sometimes, they could be too emotional, exaggerated, and oversensitive, given the instructions provided.

During the Paris Bedbug drama late last year, I posted a hilarious letter, informing Paris authorities that I had to drop my travel plans there until the ‘Bedbug Elimination Operation’ comes to an end, and hopefully implemented within the confines of ‘International Framework of Insect Conservation’.

Learned friends, immediately acted and vocally responded on behalf of Paris. Some, using AI- generated texts, smartly though; and some heavily relying on the machines, all responded and provided equally hysterical responses.

Another friend once told me someone who posts an article, mostly on a scientific topics in every 30 minutes. Clearly, you can’t produce a serious scientific write up in such short timeframe still on daily basis unless one is insulting readers’ intellect. For this small note you are reading now, for instance, I have been revising, editing and rewriting it for the last two days before I eventually let it go.

I have shared this article with two of my high school daughters; and both narrated how their classmates, despite school restrictions, manage to use Chat GPT for assignments. In school IT lab, these features are blocked and hence not directly accessible, but tech-savvy, Gen Z students always find ways to go about it. My daughters and I, however, remain aligned in our vision - the importance of genuine learning at this crucial stage.

It all comes down to how we utilise AI-powered technology. At best, it simplifies tasks, enhances efficiency and improves performance. At worst, in short, it kills critical creativity.

Finally, such tools will of course remain useful and beneficial when used to nurture productivity. One, nevertheless, should strike a balance between taking advantage of the technological advances for greater efficiency and at the same time cementing the talent, human creativity and innovation. A hard balance it might seem though, but believe me, it’s doable. Indeed, doing so is necessary for one to remain relevant, competitive, innovative and productive!

Local government climate change mitigating measures.

In the wake of the recurrent and often fatal climate change-induced shocks, cities, towns, villages, and settlements are all prone to cyclical shocks. The climate change impact is profoundly experienced at the community level and hence, local governments are increasingly taking the role of first-line respondents to climatic conditions. Yet, sub-national structures are often ill-prepared, under-resourced and poorly configured for such calamities.

It is, however, imperative to enhance preparedness of local authorities as they often serve as foot soldiers regarding to responses. It is the benefit of all to significantly improve local government response and adapt robust mitigating measures. This is crucial for protecting livelihoods, properties, and communities to reduce adverse impacts from flooding, drought, fire outbreaks and similar natural disasters and man-made hostilities. Such adaptation measures also turn urban-rural infrastructures more resilient and sustainable.

In the light of the above, reminiscing about resilience courses I have earlier taken and blending with my experience, below indicative but not exhaustive bullet points might help in the face of the recurrent and destructive shocks:

  1. Establish and where they exist strengthen disaster risk management units within local government structures.
  2. Allocate resources and budget for disaster response.
  3. Understanding resilience shocks and stresses are crucial to realistic and durable community and city-level resilience plans.
  4. Ensure a city-level resilience plan is in place. Put greater emphasis on resilient planning - institutional, physical, social, and economical infrastructure. Cities with resilience plans tend to respond better and cope with disaster risks.
  5. Proven tools such as Sendai Framework and City Resilience Action Planning Tool could serve as an effective frameworks for building adaptive capacities.
  6. Use participatory planning process so that sense of ownership takes deeper root and outcomes are all protected, respected, and preserved by all.
  7. Nature-based solutions and restoration of ecosystem services is considered as an effective way to reduce disaster risks and make cities greener and more livable.
  8. Restoration of ecosystems such as planting more trees is not only viewed as a cost-effective but also a profound means to climate adaptation and resilience.
  9. Consider ways of absorbing rainwater such as sponge initiatives to mitigate devastating flooding and utilize it during the dry season.
  10. Revisit building permit processes and avoid haphazardly developed structures.
  11. Effective and routine solid waste management is a must and in this rainy season, solid waste dumping in drainage, effectively blocking water ways should be prevented.
  12. The ability of local economy to weather and bounce back short-term shocks and long-term stresses makes local communities socially and economically viable.
  13. Financing adequately at sub-national structures is essential in making cities independent and sustainable. Resilient financing could be perpetuated with strong base of own source revenue and reliable and accountable transfers.
  14. Governments at all levels, should budget for disaster response in a responsible manner to respond meaningfully and in a coordinated manner in mitigating the adverse effects of climate change.

Solidarity from the furthest!

Following the renewed but deadly fight in Gaza, the situation has been deteriorating day in and day out. The Arab states’ abandonment on the Palestinian cause did not come a complete surprise at all. Their positions or rather inability to respond or stand up for the rights of their dehumanized, dispossessed, and disgraced brethren was an open secret.

Contrary to the prevailing narrative that excessively propagated fallacies, the ongoing assault and the aggressive fight indeed began well before October 7, 2023, when Hamas waged a surprise and deadly attack in some parts of the occupied territories. The settler-colonial regime’s gross violations on the Palestinian rights have been going on for over 75 years.

No body, however, anticipated that South Africa would emerge from the entire globe of nations in taking Israel to ICJ on genocide complications. Similarly, no one expected that Latin American countries such as Columbia and Peru, with their predominant Christian faithful’s and remote geographical locations, would show greater empathy than the entire Arab and Islamic world’s combined sympathy. These countries have indeed demonstrated a deep sense of solidarity for the besieged, carpet-bombed, and abandoned civilians in the Gaza enclave.

As if that is not enough, it has not come to anyone’s weirdest dreams, that university students in the USA would defy the status quo and courageously embrace the principles taught at the institutions of higher learning. Consequently, and to the surprise of many, they are rightfully demanding an end to genocide in Gaza.

Just as I am working on this piece, progress on a ceasefire agreement has been reported in the region, although not yet fully confirmed by the concerned parties. While this development is a welcome move, it’s important to remain mindful that this is coming after 7 deadly months during which none of the stated war objectives were achieved. Unfortunately, the human loss stands at 34,700 Palestinian deaths, with 70% being women and children.

Just as the brutality and intensity of the violence have been described as unprecedented, the steadfastness of the oppressed – their patience, courage and resilience -equally goes down the annals of history as unprecedented and unmatched.

Nevertheless, the real braves are the Palestinians in the destroyed enclave who, despite enduring profound dehumanizing living conditions, persistently document their daily living conditions and share them via social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram and similar sites. Young, educated Palestinians- men, and women- amid unparalleled human catastrophe, better utilizing technology for a greater good, defiantly share their heart-breaking conditions to the outside world.

This is how people in the west, primarily the younger generations in America, a tech-savvy gen Z, follow developments in the occupied territories as they unfold. While the mainstream media, with its blatant bias keeps entertaining the older generations in compromised accounts, the younger ones remain better informed and as such hugely connected and concerned.

The true heroes, however, are the health professionals working in a destroyed health system, both local and brave international volunteers, still carrying out lifesaving operations in extremely difficult and dangerous landscapes. It is the doctors who had to amputate a ten-year-old child’s legs without any anesthetic assistance and only illuminated by mobile phone lights to save lives.

Among the unsung heroes are those who courageously distribute food and the few allowed supplies to the needy amidst shelling, air strikes and AI-supported drone attacks. Equally brave are the journalists and media personnel who, despite losing everything- family members, homes, equipment- continue to defy fear and document Israeli atrocities instantly. A day might come when this evidence will play a crucial role in holding the perpetrators accountable!

Brutal Fighting in Sudan- The Forgotten Tragedy

Fighting broke out between the warring factions in Sudan exactly one year ago. What started out as a disagreement over the merge of paramilitary troops to national army, sadly, escalated into a violent conflict, resulting in widespread bloodshed, devastation, and disaster. Neither the national army nor the Rapid Support Force has been able to claim victory as they continue, till today, to battle for the control of key cities and critical infrastructures.

Coming from a similarly challenging experience, though lately on the recovery trajectory, a fellow sisterly nation- Somalia- I must have felt the pain and despair associated in such self-destructive and unforgiving developments. Deeply touched by this unfortunate situation, a year ago, my diary saw the following entries:

“Military confrontation erupted in Khartoum, Sudan between national army and paramilitary troops called Rapid Support Force. It is unfortunate that Sudan slides back to precarious situation in this holy month of Ramadan”.

Seeing no signs of calming down in the first week of the conflict, I jotted down the following observations in my diary.

“The fight in Sudan saw no de-escalation as deadly struggle between the national army and a powerful paramilitary group intensifies. Civilian death toll is on the rise, Khartoum airport seriously damaged, hospitals and homes shelled. Foreign countries are evacuating their nationals. This is the result of the greedy and irresponsible leadership. So sad for Sudan.”

The consequence of this conflict has been dire and much more devastating. According to the UN, the conflict created world’s worst displacement crisis. It is described as one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in the recent history, where food supplies and violence against women and children are systematically weaponized. 8 million people are internally displaced while 2 million people sought refuge in the neighboring countries and beyond. WFP warned that 28 million Sudanese face acute food insecurity in Sudan, South Sudan and Chad. (Conflict Between Warring Parties in Sudan Pushing Millions to Brink of Famine, 2024)

About 25 million people — of whom over 14 million are children — need humanitarian assistance and support. Alarmingly 17.7 million people — more than one-third of the country’s population — are facing acute food insecurity under a warning of potential famine. (Sudan: Key Facts and Figures — One Year of conflict, n.d.)

More than 10 million children in Sudan have been in an active warzone and less than five kilometres away from gunfire, shelling, and other deadly violence over the past year of war, said Save the Children. (Sudan’s Year of War: One in two in the line of fire, n.d.)

Darfur, a marginalized region in Sudan is among those affected most and hit hard. RSF is accused to have been involved in ethnic rampage there. With thousands of RSF forces along with battle-hardened militias playing havoc, the region is largely turned ungovernable.

For years, the RSF has terrorized communities in Darfur and much of the region is lawless: militias and other armed groups attack civilians with virtual impunity. Recent evidence indicates that the RSF is involved in ethnic rampages within Darfur against communities such as the Masalits. (The Guardian, 2024)

A major geopolitical and proxy war dimensions are at display, drawing in numerous regional and international players. These countries have been complicated in peddling Sudan’s internal affairs, providing financial and military support to RSF in a bid to counter what they describe as a push back to a possible Islamist influence. (The Guardian, 2024). This regrettable development only serves to intensify and perpetuate the sufferings.

An international fundraising conference on Sudan held in Paris on the first anniversary of the conflict managed to raise some badly needed funds. World donors pledged more than $2.1 billion in humanitarian aid for Sudan after a yearlong war that has pushed its population to the brink of famine. (World donors pledge $2.1 billion in aid for war-stricken Sudan to ward off famine, n.d.)

“The world is forgetting about the people of Sudan” the UN chief warned on Monday, calling for a boost in humanitarian and a global push for peace to end a year of brutal fighting between rival militaries. (‘Concerted global push’ for Sudan ceasefire is essential: Guterres, n.d.)

Sudan, a huge African country, abundant in resources, a center for civility, known with its rich culture and hospitable people is now reduced to a failed state whose population is at the brink of starvation.

Two diehard factions, headed by two warring generals; one heading the weakened national army and the other, a general with questionable credentials and wealth, often accused to have amassed it through illicit trade, backed by foreign forces, tragically relegated the once powerful and proud nation to a fragile, war-torn and an impoverished nation.

With the unprecedented murder, mass destruction and forced displacement that have been unfolding for the past seven months in the Gaza Strip, Palestine with the blessings of many, the disastrous humanitarian catastrophe in Sudan is largely overlooked, allowing its perpetrators to evade accountability. That is if any humanity and moral obligations still exist in today’s world!

Sudan war is a forgotten tragedy, and the lives of millions of innocent people are shattered, destroyed and their pleas ignored!

Happy to have collaborated with my colleague Nimo Jirdeh in producing a brief reflection on the significant importance of local governance in fostering stability, state-building and provision of public services to strengthen legitimacy and the social contract. One such important vehicle has been JPLG, a nationwide, multi-agency, multisectoral local governance program that not only promoted Somali local governance agenda but reshaped local governance landscape for the past 15+ years.

Going forward, a differentiated, innovative, and adaptive approach for sub-national structures is needed to consolidate gains made in the recent past and expand into the areas that have previously received limited assistance.
Localized governance is key to stability, improving quality of life and creating shared prosperity for all.

29 days have swiftly passed since the commencement of the holy month of Ramadan. And we just found ourselves nearing its conclusion. How swiftly time flies!

I earnestly pray that Allah, the Almighty accepts our fasting and all the virtuous deeds associated with it. May He bestow upon us the blessings and abundant favors of this glorified month. May He overlook our shortcomings, multiply our good deeds.
Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, is the month of fasting, self reflection, purification and consolidating one’s connection with Allah, the Creator. It’s a month we frequent to mosques with utmost dedication, engage in congregational prayers as always, deep dive into the teachings of the Quran and extend charity to the less fortunate in a scale never seen in other months.
It’s a much-needed spiritual retreat with a transformative opportunity, punctuated with a nightly redemption of freeing people from the Hellfire. May Allah register our names among the key beneficiaries, whose sins are forgiven, rewards multiplied and categorize us among the righteous, the pious.
Throughout this month, as in every year , 1.9 billion people around the globe continued to diligently observe not only fasting from dawn to dusk, but have also strived to refrain from malpractice to the best of their abilities.
We express gratitude to Allah, the Almighty for allowing the month to conclude with peace, faith and good health.
Lastly but certainly not least, may Allah protect the people in Gaza who have endured amidst the unbearable sufferings inflicted by an apartheid regime. Despite facing Israeli’s blockade, bombing and genocidal violence in near famine conditions, they have remained steadfast in their undertakings. Just as the brutality and intensity of the violence has been described as unprecedented, their steadfastness, patience, courage and resilience equally went down in to the annals of the history books as unprecedented and unmatched.
Farewell Ramadan, we shall miss you dearly and eagerly long for your return next year God willingly!

Interesting Personality

Chatting with an interesting personality, the Mufti Mahdi aka Makhtal or simply Mahdi Sheikh. He is the founder and administrator of an informal, privately operated qualification authentication center. Employing a blended methodology, combining convention-based AI variables mixed with meticulous observations, controlled experiments and insights into personal habits, it validates one’s credentials. In many cases, the findings seem to be relevant. Critics, however, question the vast data processing, reliance on traditional techniques and fast-paced conclusions.

Sh. Mahdi, a scholar with a good grasp of Islamic jurisprudence exudes an easy-going demeanor. He always offers straightforward Fatwas, often at the behest of friends requests. In addition, he enjoys sharing tips for successful studies in various disciplines, work ethics, broadening perspectives through in-depth reading, and exploring entrepreneurship endeavors.
Despite being widely perceived as a learned fellow by both friends and foes alike- he has lately been observed enrolling at a little-known, low-cost, underground institution frequented by adult learners and semi-illiterate politicians for quick fixes. The course he has been taking and the qualifications he secured remain undisclosed. Not to mention that he is currently doing a Doctorate studies, albeit virtually.
Sh. Mahdi with his famous MAHDIYAYNTA, the late afternoon long naps is missed in the social media platforms. His presence and deliberations would have made the platform much more insightful and inspirational.
We urged him to come forward, engage in constructive dialogue with the youth and share his thoughts. I earnestly anticipate that his engagement will unveil, hitherto hidden wisdom and serve as a valuable guide for the youth!
